The rules
If you only read one section, read this one. Each rule comes straight from TikTok's own guidance.
- Write the hook before you press record. Viewers must know what this is and why to stay within 3 seconds. Never open with a greeting.
- Watch time is the master signal. TikTok predicts likes, shares, comments and skips. Finishes and swipes are explicit inputs. Cut every pause.
- Be original or be invisible. Reposts, lightly edited clips and anything with another app's watermark are kept off the For You feed and can't earn.
- Niche down to a lens, not a topic. "Fixes desk-worker posture" beats "fitness coach." Keep most videos inside it.
- Make it distinctive, helpful, surprising and relatable. Saves and shares drive long-term distribution.
- Fill a 9:16 frame at 1080p or higher. No blurred bars. Keep text and faces inside the safe zone, away from the right-side buttons.
- Music from frame one, at 20–30% of your voice. Videos with background music average 98% more views. Use TikTok's licensed library.
- Caption everything. Over 30% of viewers watch on mute.
- End with one specific ask. "Save this for tax season" beats "like and follow."
- Diagnose before you post more. Posting more never fixes a weak hook.
How distribution works
The For You feed, in six steps
- 01Read the viewer
What they watched, finished, liked, skipped, commented on and saved.
- 02Pick candidates
Matches their interests, their location and the region you posted from.
- 03Predict
Estimates the odds they'll like, share, comment or skip.
- 04Rank
Highest predicted scores move forward.
- 05Add variety
Near-duplicates are swapped out. Copying a trend exactly means competing for the same slot.
- 06Apply rules
Safety checks, plus space for local creators.
Search is a separate engine
Ranks relevance first, engagement second. Relevance comes from your spoken words, on-screen text, caption and hashtags. Hidden or tiny keyword text gets flagged as spam.
Low views ≠ shadowban
Restricted videos show a warning in Analytics. If there's no warning, it's an engagement problem, not suppression. Fix the content.
Strategy
Most viewers need to see you deliver more than once before they follow. Recognition "rarely comes from one breakout post." Build it in three layers:
Topic
The overlap of what you could talk about every week and what people actually search. Pick a lens: the science of why recipes work, not "cooking."
Voice
One recognizable style: pacing, fonts, framing, even outfits. Hold it long enough that viewers know it's you before they read your name.
Series
A named, repeatable format with the same intro and outro, collected in a playlist. Don't quit after two episodes.
- Topic test: is it timely, surprising or relatable? Would someone send it to a friend?
- Formats that work: solve a problem, bust a myth, share a hack, teach step by step, reply to a comment with a video.
- Pivot slowly. Keep one or two signature elements and judge a change over about four weeks, not two posts. Sudden niche switches confuse your audience and the algorithm.
Anatomy of a video
0–3 s
Hook
Lead with the payoff, a tension or a question. Get a title on screen. Start the sound at frame one.
3 s – end
Hold
Change something every few seconds. Deliver the second layer of depth. Tease the best moment early.
Last beat
Act
One specific ask: save, comment, or watch the next episode.
Rewrite weak openers
Before
"Today I'm showing you a 10-minute core workout."
After
"This 10-minute workout gave me visible core definition in six weeks. Here's exactly what I did."
Fix formula: Tension (the problem or result) → Proof (why trust me) → Promise (what you'll get by the end).
Hook types that work
- Show the end result first
- A question answered at the end
- Timer: "in under 8 minutes"
- Specific result: "saved me $2,400"
- Bust a common belief
- Start mid-climax, then rewind
- "I saved the best for last"
- "Guess the price before I tell you"
- Before and after
- A blooper
The four retention standards
Distinctive
Recognizable within 2 seconds: consistent framing, light and color, plus a micro-niche entry point.
Helpful → saves
Skip surface advice. Give the exact mistake plus the specific fix, with numbers and timings.
Surprising
A counter-intuitive angle, not louder sound effects. Try flipping the order: start with the failure.
Relatable → shares
Sharp, specific moments ("the 10 minutes in your car before the gym") and templates viewers can copy.
Shoot
"One fix at the source beats five fixes in post."
- Resolution
- 1080p or higher. 720p is the upload minimum, not the target.
- Frame
- Vertical 9:16, filled edge to edge. True landscape is fine and gets a Full Screen button. Letterboxing never is.
- Stability
- Tripod or a stack of books. Handheld only with two hands.
- Focus
- Wipe the lens before every shoot. Lock focus on the subject.
- Light
- Face the window. Never stand with the light behind you. Three-point: key at 45°, a dimmer fill opposite, a faint backlight.
- Mic
- External mic about 15 cm (6 in) from your mouth. Turn off the AC, fridge and fan, even for one take.
- Sound check
- Record one line in the exact spot and play it back. If the background is louder than you, move about 20 ft.
- Background
- Clean, on-brand and consistent. Clutter signals low quality.
- Green screen
- Plain wall and even front light. At least 4 high-res visuals, with no screenshots or watermarks. Point at the visuals rather than standing in front of them.
Edit and sound
- Cut every pause. If a section doesn't move the video forward, delete it. Weak full-video watch time means getting to the point 30% faster.
- Mix layouts (green screen, split screen, overlays, full-frame moments) to lift watch time.
- Two audio cleanup tools, in order: TikTok noise reduction, then CapCut Enhance voice. If that doesn't fix it, re-record.
- Captions: auto-generate, correct names and timing, use white text with a shadow, highlight key words, keep inside the safe zone.
The music check
Match
Instrumental under talking. Never vocals under a voiceover.
Mix
20–30% of voice level. Test on phone speakers.
Move
Starts at frame one and runs to the last.
Mind
Licensed library only, or the segment gets muted.
Rule Turn on "Allow high-quality uploads". Otherwise TikTok posts your video at standard quality.
Package
Cover
- Sharp, centered subject at 1080×1920
- Short title: state the topic or create curiosity
- Keep clear of the edges and UI
- Same template every time
Readable in under two seconds. If you have to squint, redesign it.
Caption and tags
- Treat the caption as a second hook, not a summary
- End with a question that invites comments
- 3–4 relevant hashtags. More can hurt
- Add series videos to a playlist
Never leave the caption blank.
Rank in Search
- 01Find a gap
Use Creator Search Insights to find a topic with high demand and few good videos, ideally one that's rising.
- 02Say it three ways
Speak the keyword, show it on screen and write it in the caption.
- 03Post while it's rising
Then track search views, CTR and ranking.
Red lines
Break these and the video gets removed, kept off the For You feed, or barred from earning.
- Unoriginal content. Copies, unedited reposts, compilations with no added value, someone else's watermark.
- Unlabeled realistic AI. Face swaps, fabricated speech, cloned voices. The label can't be added after posting, and it doesn't reduce reach.
- Undisclosed promotion. Any payment, gift, commission or your own business needs the disclosure toggle.
- Engagement bait. "Like for like," fake incentives, misleading claims to boost views.
- Unlicensed music. Muted segment or takedown.
- Risky stunts or driving, graphic shocks (including jump scares), sexualized framing, extreme diet claims. All kept off the For You feed.
- Hidden keyword stuffing or bought engagement. Treated as spam.

Diagnose and monetize
When views drop, work through these in order. First check that nothing is restricted (Account check, Inbox), then look for anything you changed recently, then check which traffic source fell. Then compare your last 5–10 videos:
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Big drop-off in the first 3 seconds | Hook | Rewrite the opening line |
| Few people finish the video | Pacing | Get to the point 30% faster |
| Few saves or comments | No takeaway | Add a clear takeaway and a specific ask |
| Views but no follows | Identity | Consistent topic, style and series |
| Low For You traffic | Topic | Tie the topic to a relevant trend |
| Low Search traffic | Keywords | Match titles to real searches |
Getting paid
| Program | You need | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Creator Rewards | 10k followers, 100k views in 30 days, 18+, personal account, 8 countries | Videos over 1 minute. Payout per view rises with watch time, completion and search value |
| Subscription | 10k followers, 100k monthly views | You keep 70%, up to 90% if you post 3+ subscriber-only videos a month |
| LIVE | 18+ and LIVE access | 60–80 minute streams get more views. Post a teaser first |
